Everything about the road traffic regulations exam – who can attend it, how many times and how does it take place

RTR stands for road traffic regulations. Knowledge of the basic rules of conduct in traffic or road traffic regulations is certainly essential for all road users, and it is especially important for all drivers of motor and other types of vehicles. Even for pedestrians and cyclists, at least basic knowledge of the road traffic regulations is necessary for safety reasons, as they are also active participants in traffic. We all need to learn the basics of road traffic regulations, and future drivers of motor vehicles are also required by the Drivers Act to take a special road traffic regulations exam.

Who can attend the road traffic regulations exam?

There are certain conditions for attending the road traffic regulations exam. The first condition is the age limit, which depends on the particular category, namely:

Category AM (H) – at the completion of 14.5 years of age

Category A1 – at the completion of 15.5 years of age

Category A2 – at the completion of 17.5 years of age

Category A – at the completion of 23.5 years of age

Category B – at the completion of 16 years of age

The other conditions include a medical certificate, a passed first aid exam for all categories except AM and F, a valid identity document and a completed road traffic regulations course. The presence in the road traffic regulations course is mandatory. The completed education has a permanent validity.

Do not hesitate – complete the road traffic regulations course as soon as possible!

For some time now, you are allowed to start your training for a driver’s license for a passenger vehicle at the age of 16. Safe driving experts find that these young people – who, after completing the training, are allowed to drive a car in a presence of an accompanying person for two years and take the practical part of the exam after two years – are consequently safer and more experienced drivers compared to those who take only the mandatory 20–30 school hours and pass a driving test, and end up on the road independently by themselves with quite little practical experience.

How many times is it allowed to take the road traffic regulations exam?

You can apply for the national road traffic regulations exam (the theoretical part of the driver’s license) after successfully completed first aid training where you get a permanent first aid card, a valid medical certificate that is valid for 3 years, and a driving record card where the completed theoretical training (road traffic regulations course) is entered.

You can apply for the road traffic regulations at any administrative unit. Of course, there are several attempts at your disposal. If you do not successfully pass the road traffic regulations exams, you can immediately apply for the exam, but you will not be able to take it earlier than in five days.

There are a number of tools, books and online materials available to prepare for the road traffic regulations exam, and you can also test your knowledge using online test sheets and mobile apps. To make learning easier, even the most difficult road traffic regulations questions are available online, so you can easily prepare for the exam very well.

How does the road traffic regulations exam take place?

Driving schools carry out the road traffic regulations courses as dictated by the training programme for motor vehicle drivers. Thus, the future drivers must attend – in the selected driving school, before the start of the practical driving – the obligatory general and additional part of the theoretical training, which takes place in the form of lectures on road traffic regulations. The theoretical training carried out is followed by a test or an exam on road traffic regulations.

You complete the test sheet of the road traffic regulations exam on a computer, before the competent national exam commission for motor vehicle drivers. At least 90% of the questions must be answered correctly for the successful completion of the national road traffic regulations exam.

Individual road traffic regulations exams include 30 (category G) to 40 exam tasks (categories B, C, D and CE). The time available to complete the exam – from entering the test sheet until its submission – is limited to 40 minutes, but there are no time limits for answering individual questions within that time.

When you submit a test sheet, the answers can no longer be changed, but you can review your test to see if you have answered the specific questions correctly. Once the examiner has obtained the results on his/her computer, he/she informs you orally. You have the right to re-examine your test sheet.

Once you have successfully passed the road traffic regulations exam and obtained the certificate, you can proceed with the practical part of the driver’s license – by driving a motor vehicle.
